Barbara R. Heard, Ed.D., M.S., MLS(ASCP)
Barbara R. Heard, Ed.D., M.S., MLS(ASCP), earned her bachelor's degree in medical technology from the Pennsylvania State University. After graduation, she worked in clinical hematology and microbiology labs for several years before deciding to change careers. She earned her master's degree in biological sciences and grade 7-12 biology teaching certification from Western Michigan University. She earned her doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of New England. Heard was a full professor in the science department at Atlantic Cape Community College teaching anatomy and hysiology and microbiology for 17 years until her retirement in June 2023.
Heard's interest in supporting students with disabilities in the science laboratory began over a decade ago. She initially focused on students with blindness and visual impairments in biology. Her interests have expanded to include all students with disabilities in the sciences. Today, she remains vitally interested in giving students with disabilities the opportunity to successfully complete science courses by applying the tenets of Universal Design for Learning in course design and providing the students with necessary supportive accommodations.
