Richard L. Hodinka, Ph.D., is professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine where he spent over 26 years as a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and Director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia before retiring from these institutions in 2014. Most recently, he was a tenured professor in microbiology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville from 2014-2021 and served as the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences from 2015-2020. He has years of experience in development and translation of viral diagnostics into clinical practice, with a major emphasis in the design, validation and implementation of qualitative and quantitative molecular-based assays and their use in patient care and management.
Hodinka is active in and has held positions of responsibility in the American Society for Microbiology, Pan American Society for Clinical Virology and Association for Molecular Pathology. He has served as the co-organizer of the Clinical Virology Symposium from 1994-2002 and co-organized the Molecular Virology Workshop for over 20 years.
Hodinka has authored numerous original scientific publications, review articles and book chapters in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases and has delivered many invited presentations. He is an editor of the Clinical Virology Manual and serves as an invited reviewer and editor/editorial board member for various journals. His awards include fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology, ASM bioMérieux Sonnenwirth Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology, PASCV Diagnostic Virology Award and PASCV Dupont Clinical Virology Young Investigator Award.
